Emergent Music And Visual Music: Inside Studies, Part Two: The DVDs
The four DVDs contain audiovisual examples of the studies covered in Emergent Music and Visual Music: Inside Studies, Part One: The Book. This is the first time the material on the DVDs is available outside of Pellegrino's live performances. For some video examples go to YouTube, Ron Pellegrino's channel.
The presentational form of the entire package, including all aspects of the DVDs and the book, is like a record of a combination of personal visits over the years to Pellegrino's studios and to his public presentations. As such, the presentations are informal and conversational yet packed with relevant detail.
DVD Volumes 1 and 2 include a broad range of studies involving a variety of video explorations, computer animations based on dynamical systems algorithms, music synthesizer-driven laser animations, and full and excerpted recordings of studio sessions and live concert performances by Pellegrino with various collaborators--dancers, video artists, and musicians.
Volumes 3 and 4, called Pythagoras & Pellegrino In Petaluma, contain music synthesizer-driven, animated laser imagery-visual music meditations based on Pythagorean principles articulated as an approach to performance that is, in fact, a type of real time composed walking tour through the various states of dynamic equilibrium found around the intersections of stereo wave trains whose fundamental frequencies have whole number ratios. The meditations are video-appropriate examples of laser animations that are created via a real time compositional process, a process that can be thought of as a dance to, from, and around those intersections.
EMERGENT MUSIC--music that grows out of algorithms or systems with environments designed or naturally configured to promote self-organization. In the process of generating such music, the composer's role is to create or to find algorithms or systems that are appropriate for self-organization, as well as to make choices and aesthetic judgments on the musical value of what emerges from those algorithms and systems. Furthermore, it is the composer's role to fine-tune the configuration's variables so as to emphasize what is deemed most desirable as output features
VISUAL MUSIC--an integrated multimedia approach to music based on the principle that there are both natural visual manifestations and invented visual representations, connections, reflections, translations, mappings, and embodiments of all sonic musical elements, structures, and processes.
REAL TIME COMPOSITION--an exercise in composition that relies on the principle of "tuning on-the-fly," that is, making performance adjustments to compositional variables according to the requirements of the moment-similar conceptually to the traditional approach North Indian musicians have to their ragas and talas.
