A Name is a Name - NTSC

A cross between a documentary and a feature film, A Name is a Name is instead, a classic "road film," made largely on the proverbial and literal road in the Republic of Macedonia. At its heart, the film is about the Macedonian people, what it means to them to be known as such and the importance of their name - the Republic of Macedonia - to them.

The story line is that of a Scandinavian man who comes to Macedonia and travels by motorcycle around the country talking to Macedonians from all classes and backgrounds. The traveler never speaks on camera and in fact, we never learn his name or what country he hails from. Instead, his thoughts are conveyed through author and poet and recent Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom Sir Andrew Motion who narrates the film. Interspersed throughout the conversations is Macedonia itself - the stunning landscapes and scenery that make up this gentle country and ancient land. Places and points of interest - monasteries and mosques, historical and archeological sites, towns, little hamlets and cities, lakes and mountains - that make Macedonia what it has been and what it is today are woven in throughout the film along with musical tracks from Macedonian and internationally acclaimed artists including Morten Harket, Sigur Ros, Graham Nash, Kiril Dzajkovski, Earth Affair, Mum, Monte Negro and the late Tose Proeski.
