About the author:
When the "City of Dreams, "was first published in late 2008, my aim was to introduce a candid and neutral view of life in the city of Jakarta. I like to thank all the readers who emailed me with their support, the magazines and websites that published some of the stories, and your help in making the "City of Dreams," a bestselling book for several years.
Recently, I have felt that like most of the World, Jakarta is changing very quickly, and with these changes new attitudes, and dreams are also being created. These new aspirations make some stories in the "City of Dreams," more a journey into the fading present, rather than one into the Jakarta of the future.
Acting upon the advice of my publisher, and readers suggestions, this book is going to be up-dated to suit these changes, and a new version of the "City of Dreams," is going to be published by the start of the New Year.
Authors tend to be very private individuals, and like many writers I prefer anonymity, but just to clear any misunderstandings over this, I am based in South East Asia, and solely work in the field of publishing, Mark Medley as one of my "pen names."
Regarding, one or two negative comments about the layout, font and even some of the vocabulary in this book. The layout of the book uses Georgia font, which is commonly used for publications, whilst the margins are designed to enhance readability, bearing in mind that readers come from all age groups, and nationalities.
Some of the vocabulary used is has been Indonesianized, as probably only in Indonesia, you would find a "Mallish kind of Love," so it is used to enhance the local theme of each story. Readers can also find a glossary of Indonesian terms used inside the "City of Dreams." I hope this clears any misunderstandings over the actual design, layout and vocabulary in this book.
On a personal note, each story is written in a neutral manner, rather than a stronger more biased, and predictable tone, this was to avoid a stereotypical "Westernized" or "Asian" viewpoint of the "City of Dreams," and allow you the reader the freedom to judge for yourself each true to life tale.
Please bear in mind that unlike many other places in the World, Jakarta, has always been one of our World's more enigmatic places, and there is usually an element of surprise, and unpredictability in the "City of Dreams."
Many thanks for your support, and I hope you enjoy your journey into one of Asia's more enigmatic cities, and one day visit Indonesia.
