Let's Explore Coney Island

Authored by Zachary Malott, Michael Malott

Coney Island has long been an icon of American amusement parks. The first roller coaster was erected in Coney Island back in 1884. Between 1880 and World War II, Coney Island was the largest amusement location in the United States and attracted several million visitors each year. At its peak it contained three major amusement parks, Steeplechase (1897), Luna Park (1903) and Dreamland (1904). It is home to three national historic landmarks, The Wonder Wheel Ferris Wheel, The Cyclone Roller Coaster, and the Parachute Drop. It is also well-known for its unique and gritty character fueled by circus sideshows and other oddities.
Nestled comfortably in Brooklyn, Coney Island now faces a tragic fate. A new land management company called, Central Amusement International. The corporation has just taken on a ten year lease from the city for Coney Island's famed Boardwalk. They have evicted businesses who have made their home on the Boardwalk in some cases for six decades and announced their plans to change Coney Island forever by building high-rise hotels, an indoor amusement complex which would generate revenue year round, a sports bar and even their intentions to make the Boardwalk a "cement walk".
Join child author, Zachary Malott as he takes you on a journey at what might be the last of this great American icon. Zachary takes readers on an exciting journey into Coney Island, exploring the long history and character of this special place.
