About the author:
Gretchen C. Hohmeyer was born in the Adirondacks of New York State in 1994. By the age of three, she had already taught herself to read by making her father read her the same books over and over. Though the earliest recorded bit of writing she has is from age nine, she's pretty sure she was writing from the second she could hold a crayon. For kindergarten thru fourth grade Hohmeyer attended a Waldorf school to which she gives credit for teaching her how to wield her imagination. At the age of twelve, she began her first novel which she finished a year later. While she hopes that monstrosity will never see the light of day for quite some time, it spurred her on to write more novels and get them published. She began National Novel Writing Month in 2009, writing the first book in the Mind Evolution Chronicles in fourteen days, which she subsequently self-published. Since that simply wasn't good enough, she fought to finish the sequel, Breaking Barriers - Xander's Story, in eight days the following year.
When she isn't writing, Hohmeyer can be found doing one (or several) of a million things at her family's lodge and restaurant. Depending on the day, she might be doing everything from driving the John Deere tractor to waitressing in the dining room ... or both. In her spare time, Hohmeyer is a junior in the Laurel Springs Academy for the Gifted and Talented, an online correspondence school. She is also the editor of her school's Teen Voice newsletter. She hopes to go on to double major in education and creative writing in college so she can teach at a correspondence school and write novels full time, and eventually get her Master of Fine Arts in fiction.
Whatever happens, she's sure it's going to be a wild ride.

Gretchen C. Hohmeyer
For Xander Rolandsson, the last five years have been a personal hell.
He was supposed to be the only Shielder prodigy in Elite City. He was supposed to be standing at the side of Tomas Eriksson, the Shielder on the Elite City Council. And he would be there, too, if it wasn't for the events of five years ago.
He's been stuck watching Clayton Stefansson, who the Council of Elite City deemed to be a traitor. It's been his life. However, when Clayton's retrial sets him free of prison, Xander thinks he's finally going to get on with his life.
Now, he's forced to be Clayton's tail at all times, waiting for the event that will give Tomas reason to put Clayton back in jail ... for good. But just when Xander thinks he's home free, ghosts from both he and Clayton's past jump in and complicate matters. Tomas gives Xander the chance to have all he's ever wanted, but will Xander take the opportunity now that he knows there a cost?
Or will trying to decide his own destiny cost him more than he ever could have thought?
