Care Means Caring
For dedicated nursing assistants, providing excellence in care goes far beyond meeting the requirements stated in a job description. Combining empathy, understanding and a very caring nature with their daily care, makes all the difference to residents who can no longer care for themselves. Often alone in the world, totally dependent on their caregivers, frail residents in long-term care realize their quality of life revolves around their nursing assistants.
In this DVD, filmed in a long-term care facility, viewers meet both nursing staff and residents. Observing nursing assistants interacting with residents, qualities of compassionate care become immediately apparent. Soft tones of voice communicating reassuring and positive messages, gentle touch and patience clearly demonstrate to the resident a caring relationship.
Interviews with staff discuss: the need for patience; the importance of spending extra time with a resident whenever possible; the need for establishing a personal relationship; and the importance of a gentle tone of voice and gentle touch. Even for residents who appear to be non-responsive, nursing assistants talk about speaking with them, and being gentle when caring for them. In heart felt moments, residents tell the nursing assistants how important they are, how the care they provide is vital to their well being and how appreciative they are.
