County Wicklow, "Contae Chill Mhantáin" was named after the town of Wicklow, (Cill Mhantáin) which derives its name from the Old Norse name "Wykynlo" and was created in the 1606 from parts of County Carlow and County Dublin. The Wicklow Mountains are the largest continuous upland region in Ireland and two of the largest rivers in the region, have their source in the western part of the county, the River Liffey and the River Slaney. The county is rich is prehistoric monuments from the early Neolithic period to the late Iron Age and beyond.
