About the author:
Hoda Rashad has been an English Instructor and curriculum consultant for the past 12 years. Rashad is also a prior owner of NIYAA (National Institute for Youth and Adult Activities) an educational consultancy and program development provider which organized, and executed several humanitarian initiatives for the needy in Egypt including but not limited to:

*Bringing water facilities to 58 homes in an impoverished, rural area ("Zawyit Sultan") in the governorate of Al-Minya;

*Building a multi-function medical facility in a village ("Nawara") identified by USAID as the most impoverished area in the second poorest governorate (Fayoum) in Egypt; the closest medical facility was over 67 kms (42 mi) away with scant transportation;

*Provided and planted 70+ trees specially chosen to absorb underground water that was eroding the foundation of a local school, in addition to raising funds necessary to sponsor a full year's tuition for 30 local orphans.

During the revolution Rashad was involved with people at the forefront of the protests. Consequently, during the days of the occupation of Tahrir (Liberation) Square, she wrote a non-political blog (under the fake name:Salma Mokadem), reporting on the dramatic events that were taking place, as they occurred:
(http://www.egyptsliberationlive.blogspot.com/ -- caution: there is a disturbing image of the beaten face of one of the martyrs, juxtaposed with a picture of him happy and living).

She began work on the book shortly after President Hosny Mubarak abdicated his presidency in February of 2011.

Rashad is a dual national, American/Egyptian and resides partially in both countries due to her husband's work. She is also the mother of two children.

The Egyptian revolution was one of those events where you had to be there to fully understand it. Even those who were present-and participated in various ways-tend to come up with differing accounts of what led to it and what happened during and after it.

Rising from Tahrir weaves together ten stories of Egyptian activists, writers, celebrities and regular citizens into a tale of culture, courage and the fight for freedom. The stories are gathered from over 40 hours of recorded conversations, combining the accounts of Film Director/Screenwriter Mohamed Diab, Religious Scholar and TV Host Moez Masoud, Nobel Laureate Dr. Mohamed El Baradei's Campaign Manager Mostafa El Naggar, Muslim Brotherhood Activist Mohamed Shawky, 6th of April Activist Shahinaz Meshaal, Martyr Khaled Saeed's mother Layla Marzouk, Group Executive Chairman of Orascom Telecom Khaled Bichara, Baladnaa NGO Executive Director Wael El Zoghby, Co-founder of Deraya Sales Services Mohamed Shafei and Educator/Writer Hoda Rashad.

The goal is to make Egypt's story accessible to individuals beyond Egypt and the Middle East. This is an opportunity to bring people of diverse backgrounds closer through the sharing of a struggle that most of us can inherently grasp: the struggle for basic human rights.
