About the author:
Lichty was born George Maurice Lichtenstein (1905-1983). At 16 he sold his first cartoon to Judge and later was the editor of The Gargoyle-University of Michigan's humor magazine. He began his newspaper career doing cartoons and illustrations for the Chicago Daily Times and was also a contributor to Collier's.
Grin and Bear It became syndicated in 1932 and won the National Cartoonists Society Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award four times-1956, 1960, 1962, and 1964. Lichty's style, known as the "animation smear technique," influenced Joe Teller (of Penn and Teller) in his 2000 release of "When I'm Dead All This Will Be Yours!": Joe Teller-A Portrait by His Kid, as well as artist Ed Ruscha.
