The day Amy Winehouse passed away, I wrote a blog post in which I simply tried to let Amy tell her story, in her own words, through the many recorded interviews she left behind, primarily on YouTube. I found her enthusiastic, articulate, and an absolute pleasure to watch and listen to as she talked about her music, her life, her love(s), and London.Evidently, I was one of the few people who allowed Amy to tell her own story, in her own words.
Over the past year, that blog post has had over 300 thousand site visits. It became abundantly clear to me, gradually, that Amy was allowing me a great privilege: to study her words as closely as she had studied her musical influences, and then, to make the realization that there are people who need help: for their addictions, but can't get it, due to financial reasons.
Accordingly, all of the proceeds for this book will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, to be used to help young people in the UK get high quality rehabilitation treatment, which ultimately makes them productive members of society, contributors, rather than a drain on society.
We all know that addiction sends people to emergency rooms, causes crime, destroys families, and results in huge economic losses in terms of productivity. Yet the most painful fact of all is that this is easily preventable.
We have the knowledge and the technology to do better. Better alcohol and drug abuse education is needed for children at increasingly younger ages. Affordable rehab and long term, after-care programs are needed. Again, for me, it is a privilege and an honor to be able to contribute to the important work of the Amy Winehouse Foundation, in this small way. Thank you kindly, Amy Winehouse, my guardian angel.
Rest In Peace, Sweet Angel...
