About the author:
John E. Pepper joined Procter & Gamble in 1963 after U.S. Navy service tracking Russian submarines in the North Atlantic during the Cold War. He became general manager of P&G Italy in 1974, returned to the United States in 1978 and became a group vice president in 1980. In 1984 he was elected to P&G’s board of directors and was named president in 1986.

Mr. Pepper served as the ninth chairman of the board and chief executive of Procter & Gamble. He retired from the Company in 2002, after 38 years of service, and continued as chair of P&G’s Executive Committee of the board for an additional year. He became vice president of finance and administration for Yale University in 2004, also serving as a senior fellow there.

A native of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, Mr. Pepper graduated from Yale in 1960 and holds honorary doctorates from a number of universities including Yale, The Ohio State University and Russia’s St. Petersburg University. He served as a founding member of the St. Petersburg University Graduate School of Management International Advisory Board and a founding member of the International Action Commission for St. Petersburg. He has also chaired the U.S. Advisory Committee for Trade and Policy Negotiations. He has served on the boards of directors of several major corporations and recently retired from chairmanship of the board of directors of the Walt Disney Company.

Mr. Pepper is author of the book “What Really Matters,” reflections on his career at Procter & Gamble and the guiding principles he recommends for success in the marketplace and in life.

John Pepper lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, where his public service commitments focus on education. He and his wife, Francie, have four children and five grandchildren.
