Trout Summer

Authored by John Peter

A novel by John Peter

"Aww ... Mom, do I haaave to?"

Yes, Danny had to pack his clothes, books, and baseball glove and spend the summer in northern Maine. The whole summer! Osprey Lake, where there was no shopping mall, arcade games, Little League, no anything of interest to a twelve-year-old city boy. There were just trees, mosquitoes, and maybe bears. That was one unhappy kid who boarded the bus in Hartford. He feared months of boredom.

Then Danny met the Mainers: LeClare, the never-quite-sober fishing guide who thought that every kid needed a bicycle, but since there was no money for one, he dumped off a truck load of bike parts and his set of spare tools so that Danny could build his own bicycle; teenager Tony who showed him how to catch fish, snare rabbits, and had a camp in the swamp; cute pixie Nadia, who introduced him to poetry; plus the ever-changing clientele of his aunt's sports' fishing camp-the businessmen, Internet entrepreneurs, a guy with golf-playing robots, the inventor of metric time, a lady philosopher with a Smith & Weston .38, a quantum physicist on LSD, a Hollywood script doctor, and many more ... an old man obsessed with a possibly mythical huge brown trout called Moby o' Maine, an octogenarian sawyer, the raccoon man, and the rest of the locals Danny encountered over time. However, in his wildest dreams, Danny could not imagine having to chase a bank robber through the woods with a Winchester .30-30.

Although the literary ancestors of this book are Huck Finn (Twain,) Twisted River (Irving.) and Shane (Schaefer,) the events described here are largely drawn from the author's first hand experiences in northern New England.
