The Origins of the New Testament

Authored by Robert C Jones

This purpose of this book is to examine the origins of the New Testament, including who wrote it and when, as well as the process by which the books that make up our modern day New Testament were deemed "canonical", or authoritative. Many people that I talk to have a somewhat hazy idea that a group of bishops convened a council in the fourth century (usually incorrectly attributed to the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D.), and selected the books that we now have in our New Testament. This makes the process sound rather arbitrary. In fact, the learned bishops of the 4th century merely put their stamp of approval on a corpus of works that had been in constant use in the Christian Church since the first century, and that were quoted from liberally by the earliest church fathers. We will also discuss the mysterious books that "almost made it" into the canon, but were rejected in the final cut, such as the "Shepherd of Hermas", the "Epistle of Barnabas", and the "Revelation of Peter". This edition contains 25 photos, with 20 of them in color.
