FOR EVERY ACTION There Are Consequences
Gail M Baugniet
Everyone calls me Pepper. My full name is Kai-Ena Lehua Bibeau. Mom chose a baptismal name that reflected her Hawaiian ancestry. Uncle Fred picked the confirmation name for his own reasons. My dad, known for his easy wit, came up with the nickname. He died shortly after I turned four. That's when Mom moved the two of us across the Pacific to Wisconsin and I met Rick. At fifteen, I gave birth to a beautiful boy and decided to have relatives back on the Big Island raise him in the 'hanai' tradition of the islands. Later, I joined the Army. Rick married a different high school sweetheart and signed up with the Marines. Vietnam, you know. Then I returned home, Rick's wife died, and here I am doing investigative work for my dad's old Army buddy who owns an insurance company in Green Bay, Packer country.
My current assignment is a background check on a man who admits to stabbing his wife. Local rumor has it he was cheating on her. That makes me wonder why she wasn't the one doing the stabbing. The boss says my independent attitude is not helpful in my line of work as a field investigator for questionable insurance claims. I disagree. What I didn't initially agree with was his decision to send me to Chicago to determine if drug-dealing had led to the fatally stabbed woman's demise.
Quickly clouding my investigation were two difficult questions that not even a Chicago police detective could help me resolve: How far would you go to ensure your child's relief from pain? With your children consigned to an orphanage overseas, would you agree to whatever was necessary to get them back?
Check out my story as it unfolds to answer these questions, along the way solving a murder - and a suicide.
