The Liberty Series: For the Love of Liberty

Authored by Laurie Barna
Edition: 1

When does passion become obsession? Artist and author Laurie Barna strives to answer that question as she presents her journey of discovery and creative process in painting the Statue of Liberty as a still life in series. Starting in 2006 with "LIBERTY #1: The Beginning," Ms. Barna depicts a realistic Liberty at the turn of the century, and provides historical insight about the immigrants who came from around the world to pass through America's "golden door."

Over the course of four years, this artist took liberties with Liberty, creating more than 100 different paintings that explore various content, such as 9/11, lost liberties, global warming, security, freedom and patriotism. Each of the 45 full-color images from her Liberty Series is accompanied by a brief overview of her sources of inspiration, design process and techniques, as well as historical facts about the statue itself. She poses thought-provoking questions, her goal being to inspire, educate and challenge the reader about the definition of liberty. She also includes special moments in America's history which serve to remind the reader of the rich heritage all Americans share. Her love of Liberty and America is the driving force behind and the essence of the Liberty Series as painted and presented in this book.

In her last painting, "LIBERTY #101: Passing the Torch," the artist connects herself to the statue as she stands on the threshold of a new place she calls, "the other side of 100" paintings. She sees more ideas, more possibilities. Is she obsessed? Will she ever stop painting Liberty?

This is more than an art book. It's about American life, Liberty and the passionate pursuit of creative expression.
