A Butterfly in China

Authored by Sean Monaghan

The flutter of a butterfly's wings can cause a typhoon halfway across the world - proverb

The proverb is attributed to the Chinese, though there are many versions, and the one above is but one of those. Another is: A spark can start a fire that burns the entire prairie, which is perhaps a little less romantic. In my reading I found debate and contradiction about the origin and the meaning of sense of the proverb. Really it is simply about chaos theory. Minute occurences can have big impacts.
That butterfly's wings might cause a slight shift in the air around the flower grove, that might set a few insects aloft, sending a small bird after them, and that bird is pounced on by a cat... and so on, each event larger and more dramatic until things begin to affect the weather.
The stories in this volume each to some degree look at how small beginnings lead to different outcomes. This clutch of talented writers have taken the idea into new directions with surprising results. Some are challenging, some inspiring and some are humorous. It's a rewarding and invigorating collection.
With stories by Danica Green, Dave Fragments, Ken Goldman, Len Stone, Voicu Mihnea Simandan, Jason Barney, Jake Johnson, Dave Fragments, Matthew Wilson and Sidney K Lerner.
