After obtaining his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley, John E. Heiss studied painting in West Germany with Herman Kimner, and did graduate work at the University of Utah, studying oil painting and other media with Douglas Snow. In the 1970s, Heiss founded The Stained Glass Place, a studio in Claremont, California, where he made over 200 leaded windows and room dividers, and where he taught the stained glass art. Heiss also taught stained glass classes at California Polytechnical University in Pomona, and at Mount San Antonio College in Montclair, California. Furthering his own design development in contemporary stained glass, Heiss studied under Ludwig Schaffrath, a leaded glass designer from Germany.

The Art & Heart of John E. Heiss
John E. Heiss
This book brings together some of John E. Heiss's fascinating multi-layered glass designs depicting human beings involved in both solitary and mutual pursuits. Almost without exception the leaded glass designs focus on the physique of the human body engaged in toil, sport, and relationships. When each picture is stared at long enough, various interpretations come to mind.
You will enjoy the colors and complexity of the works, and how each picture captures the attention and hypnotizes.
This attractive paperback is large enough to be spread out on your lap so that the amazing pictures can be viewed and contemplated in context of the text that accompanies each one.
Most of the text is very simple and eloquent, as in, for instance, "Caught in the web of procrastination, we wait too long to let our spirit guide."
