Born and educated in Hong Kong, Stephen Lau had taught at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for many years prior to his immigrating to the United States. Now he lives in Cleveland, Ohio.

Stephen Lau received his bachelor's degree from the University of Hong Kong. His training in the teaching of English as a second/foreign language included a diploma from SEAMEO Regional English Language Center in Singapore, and a linguistics qualification from the University of Cambridge, UK.
