About the author:
The Visual Arts have been a part of my life since I was young and I've been a professional artist for over thirty years. After completing a degree in Fine Art I returned to nursing to earn a living. Little did I know that this would become my real discovery. During my time of working in aged care I realized there was a need for more appropriate movies and books for people with dementia. These interests lead me to completing a degree in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Visual Art.
This mixture of arts and health care experiences has culminated in a series of movies, picture books, and word games for people with Alzheimer's disease, dementia and memory loss. This has been my passion for the last fifteen years. It is satisfying to see my activity resources being used by families, therapists and carers in aged care to support reminiscence and social interaction for people in care.
The Share-Time Pictures' books and movies are generic in subject matter to provide recognition of familiar experiences for a person in care. My storytelling may be seen in a single photograph, or perhaps in two facing pages, or the story may continue over a few pages. Each story is captured within the theme of the book or movie. My photography provides good visual contrast to assist recognition and organized visual storytelling with simple and complex information. The images may appear random but they are designed to flow, provide a cue, engage and support memories of everyday experiences.
Busy In the Garden
A Share-Time Picture Book for Reminiscing and Storytelling
Busy in the Garden is a storytelling Photo Book. It is designed to support memory stimulation of past experiences for people with Alzheimer's disease, dementia and memory loss. It is more than a book of pictures, sequential images are designed to flow, engage and tell a story within the theme of activities and plants in a garden.
Short visual stories for reminiscing include: a man building a garden rock wall, children climbing a tree, a gardener caring for roses, flowers and produce from the garden.
The book provides the opportunity for sharing, reminiscence and storytelling in one-on-one situations or with a small group. It is suitable for carers, activity coordinators, therapists and family to share with a person in care to support social interaction.
