About the author:
After buying her first Fell Pony in 2000, Jenifer Morrissey had lots of questions. Breeding this British native pony in America meant understanding its roots in northern England and translating stewardship practices to a different continent. Her interests in rare breeds and sustainable agriculture gave her important perspectives from which to ask those initial questions and to continue to formulate new ones. Owning a logging company with her husband where the ponies have sometimes been put to use has allowed her to ask additional questions. Morrissey's educational background - bachelors degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University and master in environmental policy and management from the University of Denver - provides her with the ability to both ask the questions and capture the answers in ways that can be shared and understood by others. Her articles about Fell Ponies have appeared in Rural Heritage and Driving Digest magazines as well as newsletters for various organizations, and she has published two other books about Fell Ponies: A Humbling Experience and My Name is Madie.

Fell Ponies: Observations on the Breed, the Breed Standard, and Breeding

Authored by Jenifer Morrissey

The Fell Pony is one of Britain's native mountain and moorland breeds, hailing from the border region between England and Scotland. The breed has long been stewarded by a community of individual breeders. This form of stewardship is in contrast to a centralized breeding program or strict rules on breeding. It can therefore be more difficult to get a sense of the breed. To begin to understand the breed, then, one needs to ask questions. This book is a collection of answers to questions that the author has posed since her stewardship of the Fell Pony breed began. Every day she encounters some new bit of information that either answers a question, prompts a new one, or refines an answer she previously obtained. It is her hope that providing these answers in the form of observations will encourage more questions to be asked and fresh answers to be discovered. The Fell Pony breed can only be strengthened by such inquiries.
