About the author:
Miriam Reed, Ph.D. (UCLA 1980) wrote and performed one-woman solo theatre performances before she discovered the remarkable photos taken by Clarence and Sidney Gamble in Japan in 1908. The photos and the diary kept by Clarence during the ten-week tour of Japan inspired Miriam Reed herself to visit Japan, where she discovered another culture, whose values are mind-opening for one from the West.

Japan 1908

The Adventure of Fourteen-Year-Old Clarence James Gamble

Authored by Frances Miriam Reed
Assisted by Tsutae Hamada Novick

Clarence James Gamble was just fourteen years old when he, his seventeen-year-old brother Sidney, and his parents, David and Mary Gamble visited Japan for ten weeks in 1908. Clarence kept a journal of the trip, while both young men took many, many photos, a hundred and twenty of which, along with Clarence's journal, comprise this book, giving us a glimpse of a Japan now lost, but one seen by the Gambles in 1908.
