News from the Neighborhood
Good Harbor Michigan 1875-1931
Good Harbor was a lumbering village in the late nineteenth century on the shore of Lake Michigan in Leelanau County Michigan. This book has original news items as they appeared in the Leelanau Enterprise from 1880 to 1931. Descriptive entries about Good Harbor from the Michigan State Gazeteer and Business Directory from 1875 to 1931 are also included..
The news are typical of local weekly newspapers of that era. They tell who visited whom, who was sick, and who the local teacher was. There are also serious news accounts about the Vernon disaster which took the life of pioneer Charles Kropp, the ill-fated attempt to build a railroad from Maple City to Good Harbor and to Leland as well as the story of the fire that destroyed the saw mill and the village.
A companion book is Good Harbor Michigan, which tells the complete story of the village and area by incorporating the news items from this book and many other original sources. There is fascinating information about the way people lived, genealogy of the pioneers of the area, details about the school, churches and cemeteries, the development of travel and shipping. Many dates of arrival, birth, death, and marriages are also included.
From Bohemia to Good Harbor tells the story of the Bufka family in Good Harbor, including personal histories told by Joseph and Agnes Bufka. Norbert Bufka was the youngest son of Joseph and Agnes and the last Bufka born on the Bufka farm, now included in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
