Mackenzie "Mack" Klein is a well put together second year graduate student at The California Art Institute. She is working as a Stage manager and teacher's assistant for Professor Penn Youngblood, both a mentor and a friend, and has been for the past three years. Mackenzie has big dreams for her future and everything is planned out down to a timeline. She is also a 23-year-old virgin who struggles with clinical anxiety that has gone unrecognized as a true medical issue. All of that is interrupted when she meets Carter Jacobs, a struggling schizo-affective traditional art student who is a recovering heroin addict, alcoholic, sexual deviant and a third year holdback. He had spent most of his class time and the duration of the summer in rehab. The unexpected pair falls in love, despite their differences, finding out that maybe they're not so different at all. Mackenzie and Carter struggle to care for one another despite their inability to even care for themselves. Ultimately, the couple must face two big problems: One, Carter is helplessly a victim to his addiction and mental disorder, and Two, Mackenzie refuses to give up on the man she loves.
