About the author:
Curtis Seltzer is a 69-year-old writer who has owned and operated a cattle farm and timberland-investments in Blue Grass, Va., for more than 30 years.
He is the author of How To Be A DIRT-SMART Buyer of Country Property and helps buyers of farms, timberland, conservation properties and second homes with research and advice.
He has worked as a land consultant for more than 20 years in two dozen states and several foreign countries. He has written 200 columns of advice for buyers and sellers of rural real estate.
His writing appears in newspapers, magazines and online.
He has a Ph.D. from Columbia University in political science and holds apprentice underground coal-mining papers in West Virginia.

Spinal Chords From The Devil's Backbone is a collection of 88 weekly columns written in 2013 and 2014. They were distributed to about 1,600 news outlets, magazines, blogs, independent bookstores, businesses and individuals.
This is Curtis Seltzer's 5th collection of columns about life, work and ideas on his cattle- and-timber farm in Virginia's Allegheny Mountains.
The Devil's Backbone is a 4,000-foot-high ridge that he sees from his office window in Blue Grass, an unincorporated village in Highland County.
Seltzer has won column-writing awards from the Virginia Press Association.
He has been doing farm work for more than three decades and has written How To Be A DIRT-SMART Buyer of Country Property in print and ebook. As a land consultant, he assists buyers of farms, timberland, second homes and conservation properties with research and advice.
He has an M. Phil. and Ph.D. from Columbia University, and a B.A. from Oberlin College.
