About the author:
Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra loved singing hymns as a child, and began playing the piano for classroom singing from third grade on. Pamela teaches young children through post-doctoral students. She served as Professor of Music and Director of the Collegium Musicum at Bethany College and Eastern Michigan University, and as Senior Researcher at the Göteborg Organ Art Center in Sweden. Ruiter-Feenstra's passion for children, choral music, early music, liturgy, historic keyboard instruments, and improvisation coalesce in her vocation as performing and recording artist, pedagogue, composer, author, and conductor. Author of the acclaimed Bach and the Art of Improvisation (CHI Press) and artist of four CDs on organ and harpsichord (see and, Pamela developed Muse over a decade of working with children to nurture their imaginations, find their calm centers, to learn optimal self-care and care for the earth, and to find and cherish their own voices, as their singing provides a portal to lifelong learning. Among my favorite things: enjoying my cherished family, collecting burgundy- and amber-veined leaves on golden autumn days, leading ensembles to join their voices in song in transformative community, hearing the waves of Lake Michigan and feeling the sand and water dance over my toes, playing historic organs in northern Europe where the pure sounds feed my soul, learning new languages as musical communication in context, African hair braiding, ice skating and cross country skiing in remote places, to hear the range of "swish, chu, fluhn, and creech" sounds of ice and snow at varying conditions painting my eardrums.

Muse for the Soul

Sing to Learn: Learn to Sing!

Authored by Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra

The 33 songs in Muse for the Soul reveal the power of music to stir our hearts and nurture our souls. From Psalms, Old Testament Bible stories, an interactive Seder Feast, a play on Noah's ark, liturgical theatre featuring saints and angels, and a clock to tell liturgical time cycles, music serves as a vehicle for peace. Muse for the Soul songs and events are for use in churches, synagogues, schools, and homes.
Muse songs explore the gamut of human expression found in Psalms, and connect to how children feel and respond in certain situations. Singing sacred songs helps children and adults learn to find and use their voices to speak up and sing for justice and peace.
Muse's memorable a cappella songs are intended for preschool and elementary school-age children. Muse for the Soul enhances spiritual studies, builds life skills, and offers opportunities to develop a moral compass and a life of integrity to care for one's soul and to repair the world.
The soul is the essence of who we are. Given safe, loving environments, children naturally approach the world with open hearts and souls as they observe the spots on a ladybug, legs on a caterpillar, how an excavator works, how people interact, and much more. Before hurts or fears cause walls to form inside of them, children benefit greatly from opportunities to feed and encourage their souls, to develop compassion, to acquire a moral compass, and to nurture their sense of wonder and love for the world in all its diversity. During and after the unpredictable currents of life's challenges, struggles, and suffering, children and adults can remain buoyant through care for the soul. The soul is like a hummingbird: efficient, focused, attentive, persevering, constantly moving, spirited, translucent, animated, and most precious.
