Rick Boyce first became involved in the All Australian Schoolboys carnival as a twenty four year old in 1967 when he was appointed coach of the Queensland under fifteen years state schoolboy team. A t the time he was teaching at Mitchelton State High School, coaching the school teams and playing football with the Kedron Football Club. He coached the state team another four times in 1968, 1970, 1973, and 1980. In 1996, he was manager of the state team. From 1967 until the late 1970's he was a state selector.
In 1970 and 1981, he was president of the Australian State Schools National Football Council responsible for the staging of the Australian Schoolboys Championships in Queensland. In 1990, along with Mr. Roy Wyatt, he was a co-convenor of the National Championships held in Brisbane. In 1974, he was awarded life membership of the Australian State Schools National Football Council for his services to the sport at state and national championship level.
He was President of QSSSAFL from 1971 until 1983. He remained involved in the league's activities at school, regional and state level until his retirement in 2001.
This book was published as part of the preparation for the celebration of 150 years of Australian Football in Queensland during 2016.

This book traces the history of the Queensland State Secondary Schools Australian Football League from its birth in 1959 until the year 2000. It details the struggles the league went through to become an established sport in high schools throughout Queensland. It traces the development of the state schoolboys championships from its beginnings as the South East Queensland Open Age Knockout carnival to the thirtieth championships in the year 2000. These championships were used to select state representative teams that competed in the All Australian National Schoolboys Carnival. It traces the history of those teams. Additionally, it traces the history of the open age touring teams with their tours of North Queensland, New Zealand and Victoria.
