About the author:
Robert Schenk became interested in symmetry because he was interested in tessellations and symmetry is fundamental to tessellations. He became interested in tessellations because they provided a way to make challenging and visually interesting mazes. He became interested in mazes as a result of his interests in computer programming and typeface design. Using both, he developed a maze construction set in which the computer generated mazes that were displayed using specially designed typefaces. His interest in computer programming started when he learned FORTRAN in the 1960s and continued off and on into the 1980s, when he programmed a maze game for the short-lived TI99/4. His interest in typefaces came from working with desktop publishing to design a textbook and playing with a bitmap font editor on an early Macintosh.

Exploring Symmetry Coloring Book

Authored by Robert Schenk

Mathematicians have proven that there are only 17 symmetry groups of repeating two-dimensional patterns. In this book the author sorts patterns he has used in designing mazes plus some new patterns into these 17 groups. After a few pages with short explanations of these 17 groups, the book contains almost 100 pages of designs to color. It is appropriate for all ages, from young children who have recently learned how to stay in the line to adults who enjoy the beauty of periodic symmetry. (Note: pages are printed on both sides and are not perforated.)
