About the author:
Samuel Zagat (1887-1964) came from Lithuania to New York as a young child. His Gimpel Beynish character was famous and beloved, the subject of songs and operettas and for many was the primary reason to read the paper in the morning. The editor of Warheit, Louis B. Miller, hired Zagat in 1912; his political cartoons first appeared in March of that year and his first Gimpel Beynish cartoon appeared December 8. Jacob C. Rich, one of his editors, wrote that, while the ideas and text accompanying the drawings were Miller's, "Zagat endued them with a playfulness and a Jewish charm that no other artist was able to duplicate" (Forward, July 25, 1964).
