About the author:
JP Melville is from a small village in southern Ontario, where he grew up farming and building houses. On a hot summer's day, while milking the goats inside the barn, the dusty phone rang. Six months later he was working with women farmers in St. Lucia in the Caribbean. Thus began his varied career across Canada and around the world. His work has taken him to norther Alberta, to Bhutan and Tibet atop the Himalaya mountains, to Timbuktu in the Sahara Desert, into war zones and far beyond. He has always pre-occupied himself with writing in the slender cracks between time.
He now lives in Ottawa, Canada, with his wife Rachel and a blended family of five kids, a dog, and a cat called Catalogue. They own 40 acres of bush and a cabin with no electricity. In his free time he gardens and bakes bread.
A Day Out Mushroom Hunting
It is a lovely autumn afternoon. With a lazy father on his hands and sunshine beckoning outside the cabin, a young boy named Ben suggests that the two of them go look for mushrooms in the forests around their lake. Their adventures take them into a lumber camp, over rocks, and on a canoe ride across the water. They discover more than mushrooms... and even a little magic. A surprise is in store for the father. And a surprise, too, for Ben.
"A Day Out Mushroom Hunting" reminds us of our capacity for discovery when we see the world through a child's eyes. In contrast, our absurd propensity for complicating life is exposed. Unfortunately, we are also shown the bitterness we can express when, as adults, our own innocence is laid bare.
A sweet-sad, comic book and fairy tale for people of all ages, written in lyrical prose.
