About the author:
One interest can lead to another in unexpected ways. In the 1980s Robert Schenk wrote a wrote a computer game that randomly generated mazes for the short-lived TI-99/4A home computer. In the late 1980s he developed a fascination with type design. Combining the two interests of computer programming and type design, he created a unique maze construction set in the 1990s. Tessellations were one way of presenting visually appealing mazes. Eventually he decided to learn more about the tessellations and not just use them for making mazes. In his investigations he stumbled on the types of tessellations with the properties that are featured in Delightful Designs.

Delightful Designs: A Coloring Book of Magical Patterns

Authored by Robert Schenk

There is a set of four tiles that not only tessellate, but have almost magical properties. When these tiles are arranged corner to corner, the voids in the checkerboard-like pattern can only have the same four shapes that the tiles of the family have. This coloring book contains dozens of examples of these patterns displayed with over twenty families of tiles.

The designs in the book are based on the symmetry of repeating, abstract patterns. They lack the intricate detail that most adult coloring books feature. If you want intricate motifs of recognizable objects, this book is not for you. It is appropriate for all ages, from young children who have learned how to stay in the line to adults who enjoy the beauty of periodic symmetry. (Note: pages are printed on both sides and are not perforated.)
