Byrne/O'Byrne Part 1
Arthur J. Kavanagh
This book is the first of two dealing with the Origin and History of the O'Byrnes/Byrnes, explaining how the name originated, the locations of the various Byrne septs and how the tribe fared through the centuries.
With regard to the name itself, it originally began as O'Byrne (O'Broin) but because of English clerical errors and later English laws the O was dropped by most of the O'Byrnes and the name became simply Byrne. The name was also misspelt as Birne, Beirne, O'Beirne and Burn. Other variations included Byrnes and Burns, which is similar to the Scottish name Burns.
