The War issue of When Women Waken features poetry, prose and images by women on the theme, broadly interpreted. The featured artist and writer is Vanessa German, a dynamic and prolific artist pioneering new forms of art and performance. Her work "So Many Dead Black Bodies" is on the cover. A quarter of the this issue is focused on the violence against black Americans.

You'll find work about these traditional wars: The Civil War (US), The Rape of Nanking, WWII, the Korean War, The Disappeared of Latin America, The Vietnam War, The First Gulf War and The Iraq War. We include work about terrorism, and the fear of Muslims that has arisen from the extremist violence. We also include work on about violence against LGBTs.

Broadening the theme of war further, we include the fight for non-GMO food, the creative struggles, our destruction of the earth. We also include contributions about peace and forgiveness.
