(before) eighteen

Authored by Zaria Ware
Edition: 1

becoming a young woman is not as simple as trading in ponytails for lipstick. it is understanding the souls that came before you. understanding that your body is not a mere rest stop, but a shrine. 'before eighteen' is as much a confession, intimate diary, and exploration as it is an acceptance of growing up. it is fear and it is raw. it is stereotypical teen angst. apprehension and excitement all at once. because everything always seems to come all at once.

Young poet Zaria Ware wrote about tasting moments, loving so recklessly that butterflies permanently reside in your stomach, standing up while riding on ferris wheels to feel as if you are flying, wanting to tear yourself open in front of mirrors because of the color of your skin, and screaming so violently at your existence that it has no choice but to find you; all before she turned eighteen.
