Sac & Mate, vol.4

768 surprising checkmates, 2011-5

Authored by Bill Harvey

German chess master Siegbert Tarrasch wrote "A thorough understanding of the typical mating continuations makes the most complicated sacrificial combinations leading up to them not only not difficult, but almost a matter of course" Sacrifices are simplified in the context of checkmate and they are arguably the most important tactic in the chess player's toolbox. In a survey of thousands of mate puzzles, 30% of those surveyed contained the sacrifice element. Here is a collection of 768 chess puzzles from games played in the years 2011 to 2015. Each ends in mate (mate in 2, 3 or 4) and each contains a sacrifice of material to reach that goal. Match wits with the players representing a Who's Who of today's chess world.
