Dynamic Writing 3

Authored by Tyrean Martinson

Throughout my life, I have studied writing as a student, an essayist, a poet, and a story writer. I love words and the way they combine to provoke thoughtfulness, moods, and scenes. I've read between thirty and fifty books (one loses count after a while) on the subject of writing, some for university level classes, but many on my own. Despite the breadth of knowledge in those books, I am hard pressed to recommend just a single book on writing. Each writing expert has wisdom. Each student has a different way of learning.
Teaching methodologies vary from writing curriculum to writing curriculum. No single writing curriculum fits the needs of all students. However, I have tried to compile the concepts, skills, and writing exercises that I find work best for the students that I have taught in writing classes and for myself as a writer. An important piece of the methodology in this book, and in my own writing life, is daily practice.
"Nulla dies sine line"-"Not a day without a line drawn," is a quote attributed to Apelles des Cos, a famous Greek painter from 4th Century B.C., but I believe that this quote applies to modern day writers, as well as artists. Daily practice is essential to any skill, and is especially important to writing. This curriculum is designed to create daily writing habits.
Journaling may be informal, but it helps give writers a place to play with words on a daily basis. Journaling mixed with formal writing assignments helps a writer develop their voice and style, and then put those into practice within their formal writing assignments. Due to the time constraints of students and their need to study multiple subjects, the assignments given to students are based on a single writing session a day, in either formal or informal writing.
