Pain Drawings by Patients with Chronic Pain
Dr. Steve R Levitt MD,PhD
Chronic Pain Patients from 8 Countries draw pictures representing their subjective experience of pain "When It Hurts The Most." They also rate their pain on a 0-10 scale, indicate its location and duration, and write a verbal description of their pain for comparison. Age, sex, marital status, Natonality, years of school are included along with their Doctor's diagnosis and/or Clinical Notes.
Countries from which these patients and drawings come from include the U.S., Australia, England, Finland, Germany, Scotland, Sweden and Syria. These drawings and related information were voluntarily contributed by patients and their doctors as part of a multinational research study organized and conducted by the books author Dr. Stephen R. Levitt, MD, PhD.
These unique and often very powerful pain drawings vary from simple to highly detailed. Along with the patient's written description of their pain, these drawings offer the reader a highly personal and intimate look at pain from the patient's perspective. The ways in which the patients use these drawings to visually represent their pain can have a profound effect on the viewer and allow for deeper insight into an intense and highly personal experience which is often very difficult to communicate to others including healthcare providers and care givers.
