The Southern Phoenix

Authored by Rosemary Jenkins
Edition: 1

"The Southern Phoenix" is an historic fiction novel set in rural Alabama during the Jim Crow south. The main character, John David Johnson, known affectionately as Ba' Bro, defended himself against a white male attacker, breaking the unofficial southern code which rendered self-defense an abomination subject to mob violence.

Two men: his White employer and an elder Black male assisted Ba' Bro to flee rural Alabama. He resettled in Los Angeles. Disconnected from his family, John David never forgot HIS promise to become a lawyer. He had to study hard, but he became succeeded. He also became a social justice activist. His rise from the Southern Phoenix into the pillar of society reflects John David's undying will.
