About the author:
Once an earnest Professional American Historian, Peg A. Lamphier loves history, but not most history books. She currently teaches at California State Polytechnic, Pomona, happily allowing the state of California to pay her to talk about ideas and stuff with twenty-somethings in lieu of having a "real job" (you know, something with a cubicle and grumpy adults who live for meetings).
When she's not writing Peg likes to geek out at Renn Faires and haunt farmers markets for oddly colored produce. She lives in the mountains of Southern California with her family and many dogs and tortoises.
Peg's currently writing a novel series featuring Kate Warne, the real life first female Pinkerton detective. The first novel in the series, The Lincoln Special, is out in June, 2017. The second, third and fourth in that series will follow soon after. You can learn more or sign up for Peg's email newsletter at her web page: www.peglamphier.com
The Lincoln Special
A Kate Warne, First Female Pinkerton Adventure
Peg A. Lamphier
After running away from the circus, quitting teaching and marrying badly Kate Warne thinks she's found her life's calling as the first female Pinkerton detective. It's not easy to be the first woman anything, but Kate thinks her life is just about perfect. That is, until Abraham Lincoln's election threatens to overturn not just the country, but her carefully ordered life. A host of pro-slavery conspirators mean to prevent Lincoln's inauguration with plans ranging from kidnapping to assassination.
Allan Pinkerton gathers his operatives and dispatches them Washington to investigate the threats and determine which are deadly serious. Fellow Pinkerton Juba Lane, a free black man who faked his own death to escape a punishing life as a minstrel performer, works side by side with Kate to unravel the conspiracies. Captain George Hazzard provides a crucial link between the Pinkertons and the men surrounding the president-elect. Sparks fly when Kate and Hazzard meet, though neither one has time for romance.
While the Lincoln Special rolls across the country the Kate and the Pinkertons uncover one plot after another, all the while hampered by Mr. Lincoln's reluctance to believe he's in any real danger. As the clock ticks down to inaguration day they have to uncover the anti-Lincoln movement's leaders, prevent mob violence and keep the future president alive. The price of failure is Lincoln's murder and the spread of chaos and slavery across the nation.
Note: This is the second edition of The Lincoln Special. This edition has fixed the typographical and editing errors of the first edition.
