About the author:
Author of the internationally acclaimed BACH and the ART of IMPROVISATION (Vol. One), Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra's thoughtful and thoroughly researched insights offer step-by-step instruction for readers to achieve the next level of improvisation in Volume Two: preludes, fantasias, continuo playing, and fugues that will undoubtedly enhance musicianship, service playing, and performance.
As international performer, liturgical musician, scholar, and pedagogue, Ruiter-Feenstra invites those willing to immerse themselves in improvisation to embody consummate musicianship as theory, history, aural perception, and soul-communicative playing come to life in practice and performance in BACH AND THE ART OF IMPROVISATION.
After serving as Professor of Music for twenty years, Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra works as hymn festival designer and leader, concert and liturgical artist, composer, conductor, pedagogue, author, and social justice activist. A passionate advocate for marginalized populations, Ruiter-Feenstra's newest organ works, hymn texts, hymn concertatos, and carillon improvisations and compositions focus on social justice themes and collaborations. She was recently awarded a grant to interview African American, Jewish, Muslim, and Latinx populations around Detroit, and inspired by their voices, to compose a four-movement work for carillon entitled Belonging: A Carillon Call to Care for All.
Ruiter-Feenstra's MUSE: LEARN TO SING, SING TO LEARN series represents her ongoing action to keep music in the schools, promote access to the arts among underprivileged populations, and to offer resources to classroom, music, church, synagogue, and homeschool teachers to enliven learning through sensory integration with singing while empowering tomorrow's peacemakers.
Ruiter-Feenstra concertizes, teaches improvisation and repertoire masterclasses, and leads hymn and Psalm festivals with children and adults internationally. She served as Professor of Music at Eastern Michigan University (1996-2008), Bethany College (1989-1996), and as Senior Researcher at the Göteborg (Sweden) Organ Art Center (1996-2001). Her six organ and harpsichord CDs include her organ compositions (Ruiter-Feenstra on Richards & Fowkes Organs), works of Franz Tunder, Georg Böhm, Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Jacob Froberger, and improvisations.
She is a Fleur de Son Classics recording artist and is on the performance roster of Windwerk Artists.
Bach and the Art of Improvisation
Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra
Simultaneously revolutionary and realistic, Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra resuscitates historic improvisation from relevant treatises and documentation of Bach's improvisation pedagogy in counterpoint with tried and true applications. She incrementally guides the reader from improvising cadences, chorales, partitas, and dances in Volume One to improvising preludes, fantasias, and ultimately, fugues in Volume Two of Bach and the Art of Improvisation. The chapters on continuo playing alone beckon reform of current practice.
According to Edoardo Bellotti, "In BACH AND THE ART OF IMPROVISATION, we are guided step-by-step to discover the "fil rouge" that spanned centuries, reached Bach and now reaches us. And we cannot help but be surprised by the amazing consistency and effectiveness of this route."
David Yearsley attests, "This book combines two attributes-erudition and warmth-rare in studies that engage with Bach's often-daunting legacy. Bach and the Art of Improvisation is both scholarly and welcoming, theoretically grounded yet vigorously practical, broad in its purview while full of specific insights and exercises. Ruiter-Feenstra's valuable work is an invitation to explore the richness of the past in the service of creative music-making in the present."
