Black Guides of Mammoth Cave

Black men have worked as guides at Mammoth Cave from the time of slavery until the present day. In 1838 three slaves were brought to to the cave to work as guides: Stephen Bishop, Materson Bransford, and Nick Bransford. These men began the long legacy of black individuals who have made major contributions to the development, exploration, and history of the cave. Leading tours in the cave and exploration became a family tradition for multiple generations of guides. Jerry Bransford, for example, is the great great grandson of Mat Bransford and the fifth generation of the Bransford family to work as guides in the cave. This is their story.
